Kenya Cracks Down on Gambling Ads for 30 Days

Kenya’s Betting Control and Licensing Board (BCLB) has announced a nationwide suspension of all gambling advertisements across media platforms for 30 days, effective immediately. This move aims to curb the rising concerns over gambling addiction, particularly among the youth.

The directive prohibits various forms of gambling promotions, including outdoor and social media advertisements, television commercials between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m., and endorsements by celebrities. Additionally, all gambling advertisements must now include a warning message about the potential addictive nature of gambling, occupying at least one-third of the advertisement space in the same font size.

Operators are also required to submit their advertisements to the Kenya Film Classification Board for approval before airing. This move is part of the government’s broader efforts to regulate the gambling industry and protect the public from its potential harms.

The suspension reflects the government’s commitment to addressing the negative impacts of gambling and ensuring that advertising practices align with public health objectives.
