Ruto’s Expanding Inner Circle Sparks Debate as Treasury CS Mbadi Defends Advisor Surge

Cabinet Secretary for the National Treasury and Economic Planning, John Mbadi, has come to the defense of President William Ruto amid growing public scrutiny over the increasing number of advisors appointed to the presidency. Speaking on Monday, Mbadi asserted that there is no legal limit to the number of advisors the Head of State can have, emphasizing that the President holds full discretion in such appointments.

Mbadi clarified that although President Ruto had earlier pledged to reduce the number of advisors by half as part of a broader government austerity plan, that directive has indeed been implemented. According to the CS, the advisory team has already been cut by 50%, aligning with a directive from the Head of Public Service, Felix Koskei.

“There is no legal cap. The Constitution or any law does not prescribe a specific number,” said Mbadi, addressing concerns raised by sections of the public and opposition leaders. He stressed that advisors play a critical role in helping the President navigate political, economic, and governance issues.

The defense comes in the wake of reports indicating the President’s advisory team has grown significantly, triggering debates about the cost and necessity of maintaining such a large entourage. Nonetheless, Mbadi maintained that the President’s right to appoint advisors is protected, and efforts are being made to balance efficiency with fiscal responsibility.
