Nairobi Flood Crisis Sparks Urgent Government Action

The devastating floods and landslides in Nairobi County have prompted swift government intervention to mitigate further damage and provide relief to affected residents.

Public Service Cabinet Secretary Geoffrey Ruku directed the Principal Secretary of the State Department for Special Programs to convene a multi-agency consultation meeting. This initiative aims to develop urgent mitigation measures in response to the ongoing crisis. The directive follows a tragic incident in Drive-In, Ruaraka Constituency, where a 23-year-old mother and her two children lost their lives due to flash floods. At least 55 households have been displaced, with nearly 200 residents affected. Relief supplies, including food, bedding, and sanitary items, have been dispatched to the area.

The floods, triggered by heavy rains, have overwhelmed drainage systems and caused deaths across parts of Nairobi. At least six people died overnight in floods. The Nairobi County government and Nairobi River Commission have been urged to prevent further damage and ensure the safety of residents.
