A chaotic scene unfolded in Kenya’s Parliament yesterday when two female Members of Parliament, Umulkheir Harun of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) and East Africa Legislative Assembly (EALA) MP Falhada Iman, engaged in a physical altercation during a heated debate. The incident occurred in full view of cameras, capturing the attention of both the media and the public.
This altercation adds to a history of physical confrontations within the Kenyan Parliament. In 2014, a similar incident occurred where four lawmakers were assaulted, and one had his shirt torn during a chaotic parliamentary session.
Following the recent incident, Speaker Moses Wetang’ula addressed the House, stating that the behavior of MPs reflects the choices of their constituents. He remarked, “The voters get as good as they vote in. Garbage in garbage out. Don’t blame me.”
The altercation has sparked public debate about the conduct of elected officials and raised concerns about the state of parliamentary proceedings in Kenya.
