Cholera Outbreak Claims Six Lives Across Migori, Kisumu, and Nairobi Counties

Six individuals have tragically lost their lives due to a cholera outbreak affecting Migori, Kisumu, and Nairobi counties. Health Cabinet Secretary Adan Duale confirmed the fatalities Today, attributing four deaths to Kisumu County and one each to Migori and Nairobi counties.

Migori County

In Migori County, five deaths have been reported over the past two days, including that of a two-year-old child. Health officials are on high alert to contain the spread of the bacterial disease, with eight individuals currently receiving treatment in hospitals. The outbreak is primarily affecting areas near Lake Victoria and gold mining regions.

Kisumu County

Kisumu County has confirmed two cholera-related deaths, with nine other cases admitted to various hospitals. The initial cases were traced to individuals who had traveled from neighboring Homa Bay County and within Kisumu itself. The most affected areas include Nyalenda A and Nyalenda B wards in Kisumu East, and Milimani Market ward in Kisumu Central.

Nairobi County

In Nairobi County, one cholera-related death has been reported. Health officials are monitoring the situation closely to prevent further spread.

Health authorities are urging residents in the affected counties to maintain high standards of hygiene, boil drinking water, and seek immediate medical attention if they experience symptoms such as acute watery diarrhea and vomiting. Efforts are underway to provide clean drinking water and ensure food vendors adhere to hygiene standards to curb the outbreak.
