In a shocking revelation today, Makueni Senator Dan Maanzo claimed that he was offered a Ksh.4 million bribe to support the impeachment of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. Speaking to the media, Maanzo described the impeachment motion against Gachagua as “a big joke,” suggesting that it was driven by MPs dissatisfied with the Deputy President’s failure to provide them with regular financial handouts.
Maanzo further alleged that the bribe was part of an effort by certain political figures to sway MPs into supporting the motion. According to the senator, MPs had expected to receive payments from Gachagua’s confidential expenditure allocation, and their frustration over the lack of funds was behind the push for his removal.
Gachagua has also addressed these claims, stating that his opponents were offering up to Ksh.5 million to MPs in an attempt to secure votes for the impeachment. He revealed that attempts were made to bribe several MPs, including Woman Representative Njeri Maina and Senator James Murango, to back the motion, but both reportedly turned down the offers.
While the impeachment motion was passed in the National Assembly, it now faces a critical test in the Senate, where a two-thirds majority is required for Gachagua’s removal to be finalized. Gachagua has denied all charges, including accusations of corruption and divisive rhetoric, and has described the impeachment process as politically motivated.
The allegations of bribery have intensified the political drama surrounding the Deputy President, raising questions about the integrity of the impeachment process and the influence of money in Kenyan politics.
