Nairobi Takes Centre Stage as HSBC SVNS 2 Makes Historic Debut at Nyayo Stadium

Kenya will step into a new era of global rugby sevens in February when Nyayo National Stadium hosts the inaugural leg of HSBC SVNS 2, marking a historic first for the country under World Rugby’s revamped Sevens Series structure. Scheduled for February 14–15, 2026, the Nairobi leg places Kenya at the heart of the sport’s evolving international calendar while offering both Shujaa and the Kenya Lionesses a crucial pathway back to the elite tier of world rugby.

The event arrives at a time when Kenya’s connection with rugby sevens remains deeply rooted. Hosting SVNS 2 is not only a recognition of the country’s growing organisational capacity, but also a statement of intent, positioning Nairobi as a key destination on the global rugby map. For local fans, Nyayo Stadium will once again transform into an international arena, welcoming some of the strongest emerging sevens nations from across the world.

Both Kenyan teams will compete on home soil in fields that promise intensity and variety. In the men’s competition, Kenya will face USA, Uruguay, Germany, Canada and Belgium, a blend of established rugby nations and ambitious challengers. The women’s tournament features Kenya, Brazil, China, Spain, South Africa and Argentina, highlighting the continued global expansion and competitiveness of the women’s game.

The presence of South Africa and Argentina in the women’s field brings added pedigree to the Nairobi leg. The two sides met over the weekend in the Cup final of the 2026 HSBC SVNS 3 tournament in Dubai that acts as a qualifier to HSBC SVNS 2, where South Africa defeated Argentina 12–5 at The Sevens Stadium on January 17. Both teams earned qualification to SVNS 2 from that tournament, arriving in Nairobi with confidence and proven quality.

Kenya’s preparations have reflected the significance of the occasion, particularly on the women’s side. The Kenya Lionesses are set to travel to Spain for a high-performance training camp as part of their build-up to the Nairobi leg. A selected squad of 14 players will depart for Alicante on January 26, where they will undertake a one-week intensive programme before returning to Kenya on January 31, 2026.

During the camp, the Lionesses will engage in competitive training matches against Spain and Belgium, providing valuable exposure to high-quality opposition in a demanding European environment. Head coach Simon noted that basing the camp in Europe forms part of a wider performance strategy aimed at testing combinations, improving match fitness and sharpening tactical execution ahead of the home tournament. The experience is expected to ensure the team arrives in Nairobi tactically prepared and physically primed.

The men’s side, Shujaa, are also building towards the home leg with renewed focus, aware that SVNS 2 offers a direct and clearly defined route back to the elite level.

With both national teams competing in Division 2, the Nairobi leg represents a shared mission and a rare opportunity to make early statements in front of home support.

The tournament forms part of a newly introduced HSBC SVNS structure confirmed by World Rugby in May 2025, designed to ensure long-term financial sustainability while expanding the global reach of rugby sevens in the lead-up to the LA 2028 Olympic Games. Under the evolved model, the series expands from 10 to 13 events, introducing a three-division hosting system that feeds into a season-ending SVNS World Championship.

SVNS Division 1 features eight men’s and eight women’s core teams competing across six events in Dubai, Cape Town, Singapore, Australia, Vancouver and the USA. SVNS Division 2, where Kenya will compete, consists of six men’s and six women’s teams playing across three events hosted in Nairobi (February 14–15, 2026), Montevideo (March 21–22, 2026) and São Paulo (March 28–29, 2026). SVNS Division 3 is a standalone Challenger event in Dubai, featuring teams that qualify through regional competitions.

For teams in Division 2, the stakes are significant. The top four teams from the SVNS 2 standings will earn promotion to the SVNS World Championship, where they will join the top eight sides from Division 1 for three decisive tournaments in Hong Kong, Valladolid and Bordeaux. From those 12 teams, the eight best performers will secure Division 1 status for the 2027 SVNS season.

Promotion pathway

That promotion pathway adds weight to every fixture in Nairobi. For Kenya, hosting the opening leg provides both a competitive advantage and a symbolic moment. A strong start at Nyayo Stadium could shape the trajectory of the entire season for Shujaa and the Lionesses, turning home support into momentum on the road back to the top tier.

As February approaches, anticipation continues to build. With world-class opponents, a new global competition structure and elite promotion on the line, the inaugural HSBC SVNS 2 leg in Nairobi stands as one of the most significant rugby events Kenya has hosted in recent years — a celebration of the country’s sevens heritage and a test of its ambitions on the global stage.
