SportPesa League Game week 18 Preview: Title Tension and Relegation Battles as Second Round Begins

The SportPesa League enters a decisive phase this weekend as the second round of the 2025/26 season kicks off with Game week 18, bringing renewed focus to both the title race and the increasingly tense relegation battle. With form lines drawn, coaching changes already biting, and the table tightly packed across all sections, the coming round promises another weekend of high-stakes football.

Table standings at the end of First leg.

At the top, Gor Mahia begin the second half of the campaign sitting on the summit with 33 points from 16 matches, level with arch-rivals AFC Leopards but ahead on goal difference. K’Ogalo face a familiar test on Saturday evening when they take on Bidco United at Kasarani Stadium. It is a fixture laced with memory, having suffered a painful 1–0 defeat in the first round after conceding a late 88th-minute penalty converted by Newton Ochieng. Much has changed since then. Gor Mahia have steadied their campaign, most recently delivering a convincing 3–0 win over Mara Sugar, and now arrive with renewed confidence, though under a technical bench that has not been spared scrutiny amid growing pressure league-wide.

AFC Leopards, meanwhile, remain firmly locked in the title conversation and will be on the road on Sunday afternoon to face Sofapaka at Kasarani Stadium. Ingwe are enjoying a strong run, highlighted by a dramatic comeback last gameweek when they scored twice in added time to overturn a deficit and win 2–1. Sofapaka, however, are fighting for survival and sit second from bottom, having narrowly lost 1–0 to Shabana in Gameweek 17. With Batoto ba Mungu under pressure and Leopards sensing opportunity, the clash sets up as a collision between ambition and desperation.

Elsewhere on Sunday, KCB welcome Tusker FC at Kasarani Annex in one of the standout fixtures of the round. KCB come into the weekend buoyed by a hard-earned 1–0 win over Posta Rangers, courtesy of a Francis Kahata strike, while Tusker will be looking to respond after falling 2–1 away to Bandari. With both sides hovering just outside the top four, the fixture carries significant weight in shaping the chasing pack.

At the Ulinzi Sports Complex, Ulinzi Stars host Murang’a Seals in a match that pits two sides navigating different pressures. Ulinzi were edged 1–0 by Mathare United last time out, while Murang’a Seals impressed with a 2–1 home win over Bidco at SportPesa Arena, a result that helped steady their mid-table position.

Saturday’s action opens earlier with APS Bomet hosting Shabana FC at Kericho Stadium. Bomet remain deep in the relegation zone and continue to search for consistency, while Shabana arrive encouraged by their recent 1–0 win over Sofapaka and remain firmly in the top-half conversation. In Awendo, Mara Sugar welcome Kenya Police FC, with the visitors looking to build on a 1–1 draw against Nairobi United that kept them within touching distance of the leading group.

At the Coast, Bandari FC face Kariobangi Sharks at KPA Sports Club, with both sides desperate for points for different reasons. Bandari comes off a morale-boosting 2–1 win over Tusker, while Sharks remain rooted at the bottom of the table and in urgent need of results to escape the relegation trap. The Saturday program also includes Posta Rangers hosting Mathare United at Kasarani Annex, with both teams hovering just above the danger zone and keen to create breathing space.

Beyond the pitch, Game week 18 unfolds against the backdrop of significant technical bench instability already highlighted this season. The league has witnessed a growing list of managerial casualties, underlining the pressure gripping clubs across the table. Several teams head into this round under new or interim leadership, while others remain under close watch as results continue to dictate decisions from club boards.

Coaches marked (X) have since been sacked/Left the Club – 7 out of 17 in total.

Nairobi United will not feature this weekend, as they turn their attention to continental duty with a CAF Confederation Cup Group B clash against Azam FC on Sunday, a factor that could influence the standings as domestic rivals take advantage of their absence.

As the second round begins, the margins remain fine. Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards are locked together at the top, the mid-table is tightly compressed, and the relegation zone continues to pull in teams with every dropped point. Gameweek 18 offers a fresh reset ,but also a reminder that in this season’s SportPesa League, momentum can shift just as quickly as fortunes change.
