KFS Officer Shoots Civilian Dead in Firewood Dispute, Probe Underway

In Kiptunga Forest, Kuresoi South, on Tuesday evening, a Kenya Forest Service (KFS) officer shot and killed a civilian. The officer, who was on routine patrol with a colleague, confronted the man who was allegedly collecting firewood in the forest. The situation escalated quickly, leading to the fatal shooting of the civilian.

The KFS has since initiated an investigation into the incident, though the details surrounding the confrontation remain unclear. The shooting has raised questions about the use of force by forest officers, particularly in rural areas where local communities often rely on forest resources like firewood for their livelihood.

This incident echoes a similar event that occurred in Nyeri County in 2020, where two individuals lost their lives after a confrontation with KFS officers over illegal logging. These ongoing tensions highlight the strained relationship between local communities and forest service personnel, especially in regions where access to natural resources is a constant source of conflict.

As the investigation continues, authorities are urging for calm while they work to establish the circumstances leading to the shooting and hold accountable those responsible.
