The Kenyan government has initiated the distribution of over one million bags of subsidized fertilizer to mitigate shortages that have delayed planting, particularly in high-producing counties within the Rift Valley region. Agriculture and Livestock Development Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe announced that the distribution commenced on Monday, March 24, 2025, through National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB) depots and registered suppliers.
To expedite delivery, train wagons departed from Mombasa port and arrived at the Naivasha inland port on Sunday, March 23, 2025. Farmers registered with the Kenya Integrated Agricultural Management Information System (KIAMIS) are advised to visit NCPB depots to redeem their e-vouchers and access the fertilizer.
This initiative aims to stabilize supply and meet the high demand experienced during the rainy season. The government has already distributed approximately 2.6 million bags for planting ahead of the long rain season. Additionally, 1,380 metric tonnes of subsidized fertilizer are en route to Mombasa port to further bolster supplies.
Farmers are urged to purchase fertilizer exclusively from NCPB depots and registered distributors to avoid counterfeit products. The Ministry of Agriculture has addressed previous logistical challenges, ensuring that all farmers can plant within the recommended timeframe.
