Catholic Church in Homa Bay Accuses State of Land Encroachment

The Catholic Church in Homa Bay is embroiled in a dispute with the national government over the ownership of a parcel of land opposite St. Paul’s Academy. The Church alleges that the state has encroached upon this land for the construction of a state lodge. According to the Church, the land is rightfully theirs and should not be appropriated by the government.

This conflict is part of a broader pattern of land disputes involving the Catholic Church in the region. In 2015, the Migori County Government and the Catholic Diocese of Homa Bay were involved in a legal battle over the control and management of Kitere Youth Polytechnic. The court ruled that the institution was a public village polytechnic under the county’s jurisdiction, not a private entity owned by the Diocese.

Similarly, in 2019, the National Lands Commission demolished a Catholic church in Kaptich, Uasin Gishu County, asserting that it was built on public land without proper authorization. Eldoret Catholic Bishop Cornelius Korir disputed this claim, stating that the church had been in possession of the land for over a decade with valid documents.
