Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i may be poised for a dramatic political comeback, following hints from former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua that a powerful coalition is in the works — one that could challenge President William Ruto in the 2027 general elections.
Speaking in Machakos on April 15 during the funeral of Reverend Joseph Nzola, Gachagua revealed ongoing behind-the-scenes talks with prominent political figures, including Matiang’i, Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, and DAP-K’s Eugene Wamalwa.
“We have listened to Kenyans who have said we come together and form a government that would take the country forward,” Gachagua stated. “We are doing just that with Kalonzo Musyoka, Eugene Wamalwa, and Fred Matiang’i — with me in the kitchen cooking it up.”
While Gachagua stopped short of making a formal declaration, his remarks suggest that Matiang’i, who has kept a low political profile since exiting government, could be gearing up for a major return. Known for his firm leadership style during the Uhuru Kenyatta administration, Matiang’i remains a polarizing but influential figure — particularly in the larger Mt. Kenya and Kisii regions.
Political analysts see his involvement as a potential game-changer. His reputation for discipline and technocratic efficiency could provide the alliance with both credibility and a broader national appeal, especially among civil society, professionals, and regions dissatisfied with Ruto’s administration.
Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya is also said to be in talks to join the fold, reinforcing speculation that this alliance could form the nucleus of a united opposition bloc. Sources close to the discussions suggest that Matiang’i’s role could be more than symbolic — with some insiders even floating his name as a potential presidential or deputy candidate.
Though nothing is official yet, the political winds appear to be shifting — and with Fred Matiang’i back in the mix, Kenya’s 2027 race just got a lot more interesting.
