Nyong’o Accuses Ruto of Undermining Devolution in Fiery Address

Kisumu Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o launched a scathing critique of President William Ruto, accusing him of undermining devolution and disregarding regional and ethnic balance in his Cabinet appointments.

Governor Nyong’o expressed disappointment over the President’s Cabinet selections, highlighting the absence of equity and regional balance, which are vital components of national unity. He also criticized the decision to exclude the Devolution Ministry, emphasizing that this move fails to respect the separation of powers outlined in the Constitution. Nyong’o stressed that the Constitution delineates two major branches of government—national and devolved governments—that are separate yet interdependent.

The Governor’s remarks reflect growing concerns among leaders in the Luo Nyanza region, who feel that their support for Azimio la Umoja One Kenya presidential candidate Raila Odinga has not been adequately recognized in national appointments. Notably, Eliud Owalo, a former aide to Odinga and a strategist for Ruto, was appointed as the Cabinet Secretary for Communication Information and Digital Economy, a move that has sparked further debate on regional representation.

This latest criticism adds to a series of statements by Governor Nyong’o, who has previously warned that the current administration’s actions could erode the gains made through devolution. He has called for the national government to respect the autonomy of counties and ensure that funds follow functions to prevent inefficiencies and economic waste.
