Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has alleged that President William Ruto vetoed the nomination of Charles Nyachae as the next Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) chairperson due to a longstanding feud with the Kisii community. Gachagua claims that sources within the IEBC Selection Panel revealed that Nyachae was the top-ranked candidate, but Ruto bypassed him in favor of Erastus Edung Ethekon.
According to Gachagua, the president’s animosity towards the Kisii community stems from a 2007 incident where the late Simeon Nyachae allegedly confronted Ruto in South Mugirango. Gachagua asserts that this historical grievance influenced Ruto’s decision to reject Nyachae’s nomination.
Further fueling these allegations, Gachagua points out that Ethekon has close ties to Josphat Nanok, the president’s Deputy Chief of Staff, suggesting a potential attempt to exert control over the IEBC from the State House. He also emphasizes Nyachae’s qualifications, noting his proven track record and financial independence, which he believes would have ensured impartiality in overseeing the electoral process.
These claims have sparked widespread debate, with critics accusing Ruto of undermining the integrity of the electoral commission for political gain. As the 2027 general elections approach, questions about the independence and credibility of the IEBC remain at the forefront of national discourse
