National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has emphasized that Parliament holds the ultimate authority in approving nominees for the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC). His statement comes as the Justice and Legal Affairs Committee (JLAC) prepares to begin vetting the seven individuals nominated by President William Ruto for the positions of IEBC chairperson and commissioners.
Wetang’ula directed the JLAC to commence the vetting process promptly, underscoring that while the President nominates, it is Parliament that confirms these appointments. This assertion reaffirms the legislative body’s role in ensuring that the commission is led by individuals who are impartial, qualified, and capable of conducting free and fair elections.
The nominees include Erastus Ethekon for chairperson, with others proposed for the positions of commissioners. The vetting process is expected to be rigorous, involving public participation and scrutiny to uphold the integrity of the electoral process.
