Eliud Lagat, the Kenya Police’s acting Deputy Inspector General (DIG), is one of four applicants shortlisted for the role.
In the Administration Police Service, acting DIG James Kamau is one of four applicants shortlisted for the same position.
The National Police Service Commission announced Friday that candidates would be interviewed on July 22, 2024.
The other candidates shortlisted by KPS are Coast regional police chief George Sedah, immediate former Rift Valley regional police commander Tom Odero, and former Nyanza regional police commander Vincent Makokha.
Other contenders in the APS include Gilbert Masengeli, commander of the National Police Campus, Margret Karanja of the police band, and Masood Mwinyi, a former spokesman.
The interviews will take place at the Kenya School of Government in Kabete, and the public has been requested to offer their feedback on the candidates.
This comes after the resignation of previous Inspector General of Police Japhet Koome on July 12.
President William Ruto accepted Koome’s resignation and selected outgoing DIG KPS Douglas Kanja as the acting IG of the NPS.
Lagat, the former Commandant of the General Service Unit, was designated acting DIG Kenya Police, while Kamau, the former Commandant of the Administration Training Police Campus in Embakasi, was made acting DIG APS.
DIG-KPS is responsible for directing, controlling, and administering the Kenya Police Service under the supervision of the IG.
The DIG-APS leads the Administration Police Service and reports to the IG.
Ruto’s security team commander, William Yiampoi of the Presidential Escort Unit, was transferred as part of the reshuffle.
He did not identify a new Prescot commander, but sources say a new leader will be in place soon.
Koome’s position will be filled by someone Ruto would propose and send to Parliament for approval.
Koome acquired the role in October 2022.
He is the third IG to leave office before completing his tenure.
Renson Lolmodoon, the director of operations at police headquarters, has been named GSU’s new commandant.
Ruto’s head of security, Yiampoi, was transferred to police headquarters and designated director of operations, while Murang’a police chief David Mathiu was named commandant of the national police leadership academy in Ngong.
More changes are expected in the coming days.
