TSC Begins Hunt for New Boss as Nancy Macharia’s Tenure Nears End

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has officially advertised the position of Chief Executive Officer (CEO), signaling the impending end of Dr. Nancy Macharia’s decade-long tenure. Macharia, who has led the commission since 2015, is set to retire upon the completion of her second and final five-year term, with her departure expected by June 30, 2025.

The TSC’s advertisement, published this week, invites qualified candidates to apply for the role of Secretary and CEO. The successful candidate will be responsible for implementing the commission’s policies, decisions, and strategies, and will serve a five-year term, renewable once, in accordance with the TSC Act. Applicants must be Kenyan citizens with a degree in education from a recognized university and at least 10 years of experience in education, administration, management, public administration, human resource, or financial management. Additionally, candidates must meet the requirements of Chapter Six of the Constitution on integrity and leadership.

Macharia’s leadership has been marked by significant reforms, including the introduction of the Continuous Professional Development (CPD) program, which ensures that teachers continually improve their skills. Her tenure has also been characterized by efforts to stabilize the teaching profession, reducing the frequency of strikes and fostering better relations with teachers’ unions. Under her guidance, the TSC embraced modernization, implementing digital systems for teacher registration, promotion, and transfers, thereby increasing efficiency.

As the commission prepares for a new chapter, the search for Macharia’s successor is underway, with the hope of continuing the progress made during her leadership.
