Nairobi – Kenya
Algeria secured a spot in the CHAN 2024 quarterfinals after a tense but goalless draw against Niger at the Nyayo Stadium in Nairobi. The Desert Foxes did just enough to book their place in the next round, needing only to avoid defeat to guarantee qualification. With South Africa and Uganda playing out a thrilling 3-3 draw in Namboole, Algeria’s single point was enough to see them through as Group C runners-up.
The match was played at Nyayo Stadium ,Nairobi as part of the Pamoja CHAN 2024 hosting arrangement, a joint effort between Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania. With Uganda having only one CAF-approved stadium, and final group games required to kick off simultaneously, CAF selected Kenya’s Nyayo Stadium to host this crucial fixture.

Despite both teams showing intent, the match lacked attacking finesse and clear chances. It was a physical affair marked by heavy midfield congestion, several fouls, and a red card that only added to the tension.
From the onset, Algeria showed slight attacking dominance. Meziane and Khacef tried to push forward early, while Merghem threatened with a fine header in the 43rd minute. However, Niger’s disciplined defense, led by Ridouane Assane and Djibo, kept Algeria at bay. Djibo’s first-half sliding tackle to deny Khacef a shot was a standout defensive moment.

The first real save of note came in the 19th minute, when Algeria’s keeper Zakaria Bouhalfaya charged out to stop a dangerous Niger move. He was again called into action in the 56th minute, punching away a powerful effort from Djibo. Minutes later, Bouhalfaya produced yet another brilliant save, denying Niger what looked like a sure goal in the 63rd minute.
Algeria tried to inject fresh energy by making a triple substitution in the 69th minute, introducing Bilal Moukerchaoui, Aimen Mahious, and Belhocini. But Niger responded too, bringing on attacking options such as Jules and Ahamat to chase a winner.
Tensions boiled over in the 77th minute when a scuffle broke out in midfield, ending with Niger’s Djingarey receiving his second yellow card and being sent off. Despite being a man down, Niger remained compact, frustrating Algeria’s advances.
The match saw more substitutions late on, but neither side found a breakthrough. A dangerous run from Khacef in the 83rd minute was stopped short by Niger’s well-organized backline. And by the 90th minute, with four minutes added on, the game slowly fizzled out.

As the final whistle blew, news of the South Africa-Uganda result confirmed Algeria’s fate. With 6 points from four matches, they finish behind group winners Uganda with 8 points and now set their sights on the quarterfinals, where they’ll face the winners of Group D at Zanzibar’s Amaan Stadium.
While the performance was far from convincing, Algeria did what was necessary. For Niger, the draw ends their CHAN 2024 journey, but not without a spirited showing and defensive resilience that pushed one of the tournament’s big names to the edge.

I wish that East African country to meet in the finals..that’s either Kenya vs Tanzania..or kenya Vs Uganda
