President Museveni Visits South Sudan Amid Rising Tensions

Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni arrived in Juba, South Sudan, on Thursday, April 3, 2025, for a one-day official visit. He was welcomed by South Sudanese President Salva Kiir at Juba International Airport.

The leaders held closed-door discussions focusing on regional issues, border security, and the ongoing conflict within South Sudan. President Museveni emphasized the importance of halting hostilities to allow citizens to engage in peaceful elections, stating, “The fighting should stop and allow the people to regain their power which currently is with those with guns.”

This visit marks the highest-level mission to South Sudan since recent clashes and the detention of First Vice President Riek Machar, which have heightened fears of a return to civil war. In response to escalating tensions, Uganda deployed special forces in Juba to “secure it,” acting on the request of the South Sudan government.

The international community continues to monitor the situation closely, with regional bodies like the African Union and East African organizations engaging in mediation efforts to de-escalate the crisis and support the peace process in South Sudan.
