World football governing body FIFA has officially paid tribute to Kenyan football legend Allan Thigo following his passing earlier this month.

In a condolence letter sent to FKF President Hussein Mohammed, FIFA President Gianni Infantino expressed heartfelt sympathies to the Football Kenya Federation, Allan Thigo’s family, friends and the wider football fraternity.

The FIFA President described Thigo as one of Kenya’s most respected football figures whose contribution to the game will remain unforgettable.

During his illustrious international career, Thigo earned more than 80 caps for Harambee Stars and was part of the historic Kenyan squad that qualified for the country’s first-ever Africa Cup of Nations tournament in 1972.

At club level, FIFA hailed his achievements with Gor Mahia FC, where he became a central figure during one of the club’s most successful eras. The letter referenced Gor Mahia’s unbeaten league triumph in 1976 as well as the club’s run to the 1979 African Cup Winners’ Cup final.

Infantino further praised Thigo’s creativity, vision and commanding presence in midfield, while also highlighting his leadership qualities and passion for football.

“His legacy and achievements, and in particular his leadership, his personality and his human qualities will not be forgotten, and he will be truly missed,” part of the letter reads.

Allan Thigo passed away on 10 May 2026, with his body later cremated at the Hindu Crematorium in Kisumu on 13 May.

On behalf of the global football community, FIFA extended its deepest condolences to FKF and the bereaved family, expressing hope that the support and memories shared across the football world would provide comfort during the difficult period.

The tribute from FIFA further cements Allan Thigo’s place among Kenya’s greatest football icons, remembered both for his achievements on the pitch and his immense contribution to the growth of the game in the country.
