Gachagua Supporters Protest Amid Alleged Death Threats

Supporters of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua took to the streets in Karatina and Kirinyaga on Tuesday, May 20, 2025, to protest alleged threats to his life. The demonstrations disrupted traffic and business activities along the Mwea-Embu and Nyeri-Karatina highways. Protesters lit fires and chanted slogans, voicing concerns over what they perceive as a coordinated effort against Gachagua. The police intervened, dispersing the crowds and restoring order.

The protests follow Gachagua’s recent claims that President William Ruto ordered that he be “dealt with once and for all.” Gachagua alleges that a group of 101 security officers from various agencies were deployed to harm him during a church service in Murang’a County. He also accuses the government of plotting to plant illegal weapons in his vehicles and those of his supporters. Gachagua’s impeachment in October 2024 and subsequent criticism of the administration have intensified tensions.

In response to these threats, Gachagua has demanded increased security for himself and his supporters. He has written to Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja, urging the reinstatement of his security detail and protection for his family and properties. Gachagua also claims that his security was intentionally withdrawn to make him vulnerable to attacks. The police have stated that they are ready to provide security based on his needs, advising him to notify them in advance of his movements.

The situation remains tense, with Gachagua’s supporters vowing to continue their protests until their concerns are addressed. The government has yet to respond officially to the allegations.
