Nairobi United Fall Short at Home, Mboma Strike Deepens Their CAF CC Group Stage Woes

Nairobi United’s early struggles in the CAF Confederation Cup deepened on Sunday afternoon after they fell 1–0 to DR Congo’s AS Maniema Union in their second Group B fixture at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani. Playing at home for the first time in the group stage, the Mozzart Cup champions had hoped to steady themselves after the bruising 3–0 loss away to Wydad Casablanca, but another narrow defeat left them still searching for their first points at this level.

Coach Salim Babu made several adjustments from the opening match, signalling intent but also responding to necessity. Right-back Yusuf Mainge returned to the starting lineup after serving a suspension in Morocco, bringing his experience and mobility down the flank. In midfield, Brian Magare was handed a starting berth in place of Brian Omondi, who missed the match through suspension following his late red card against Wydad Casablanca.

Nairobi United opened with urgency, keen to dictate play in front of their supporters. They kept the early tempo high and tried to stretch Maniema’s compact structure, but despite promising combinations in the wide areas, clear cutting chances remained elusive. The Congolese visitors, who arrived buoyed by their winning start against Azam FC, remained patient and composed, absorbing pressure while waiting for the right moment to strike.

That moment came shortly after halftime through a bold tactical intervention from Maniema head coach Papy Kimoto. He introduced James Mboma and Tshitenge for Mbala and Mbalako , a double change that instantly shifted momentum. The substitutions signalled a more aggressive approach, and Nairobi United were soon pushed into deeper defensive positions.

The breakthrough arrived in the 66th minute, and it came from one of the fresh legs. Mboma found the decisive touch, reacting sharply to a loose ball and firing past the Nairobi United goalkeeper to give Maniema Union a 1–0 lead. It was a clinical finish and a harsh blow for the hosts, who had shown improved structure but remained blunt in the attacking third.

The final stages saw Nairobi United press forward in search of an equaliser, but once again the lack of precision in the final third betrayed them. Maniema defended with discipline, slowing the tempo and closing the spaces that Nairobi United attempted to exploit. Even with late surges and set-piece opportunities, the home side struggled to truly trouble the visitors’ back line.

When the whistle went, it confirmed a second straight loss for Nairobi United in their maiden CAF group stage campaign and a second missed chance to establish themselves in a tough Group B. For Maniema Union, the win continued their bright start and underlined the confidence of a team looking to make more history after last season’s debut in the CAF Champions League.

For Nairobi United, the focus now shifts to regrouping once more and addressing recurring issues in the attacking phase. With four group matches still to come in the new year, their continental journey is far from over but the margin for error has already narrowed considerably.
