Homa Bay County is set to host two significant national events in 2025: the Madaraka Day celebrations on June 1 and the Devolution Conference from August 12 to 15.
The newly constructed Raila Odinga Stadium will be the venue for the Madaraka Day celebrations, marking Kenya’s attainment of self-governance. The theme for this year’s celebrations is “Blue Economy and Maritime Affairs,” highlighting the importance of sustainable use of aquatic resources. The stadium’s capacity has been increased to accommodate over 10,000 attendees, with ongoing renovations to ensure it meets international standards. President William Ruto is expected to attend and commission several projects, including the Homa Bay Pier, Kabunde Airstrip, and the new county headquarters .

In August, the Devolution Conference will bring together national and county leaders, development partners, and stakeholders to discuss the progress and future of Kenya’s devolution journey. The conference will feature side events, cultural activities, and a digital platform for registration and information sharing. Principal Secretary Teresia Mbaika emphasized the commitment to ensuring the conference meets international standards and provides opportunities for learning and networking .

These events are expected to boost Homa Bay’s infrastructure and economy, showcasing the county’s potential in the blue economy sector and its role in Kenya’s devolved governance.
