As M-PESA celebrates its 18th anniversary, the mobile money platform continues to revolutionize Kenya’s financial landscape. Launched in 2007 by Safaricom, M-PESA has evolved from a simple mobile payment service to a comprehensive financial ecosystem, offering credit, savings, investments, wealth management, and insurance solutions.
In December 2024, M-PESA reached a significant milestone, surpassing 34 million active customers in Kenya. This achievement underscores the platform’s role in driving financial inclusion and empowering millions through accessible financial services.
To commemorate its 18th anniversary, M-PESA has partnered with NBA Africa to launch the M-PESA Jr. NBA program. This initiative aims to provide basketball development and financial literacy programming to over 10,000 boys and girls across Nairobi, Mombasa, Eldoret, and Kisumu. The program includes regional tournaments and workshops, fostering both athletic skills and financial empowerment among the youth.
Safaricom CEO Dr. Peter Ndegwa expressed pride in reaching 34 million M-PESA customers, highlighting the company’s commitment to delivering secure and innovative financial services. He emphasized that this milestone motivates continued innovation to meet evolving customer needs.
