The Ministry of Foreign and Diaspora Affairs has confirmed that 64 Kenyans, recently rescued from human trafficking operations in Myanmar, are currently awaiting repatriation at the Thai-Myanmar border. The Kenyan government is in discussions with Thai authorities to reopen the border crossing, which has been closed since February 12, 2025, to facilitate their return.
These individuals were among over 7,000 foreigners freed by armed groups, including the Democratic Karen Buddhist Army (DKBA) and the Border Guard Force (BGF), from scam compounds in Myanmar. The compounds, primarily located in regions controlled by rebel groups, were notorious for exploiting individuals in fraudulent online activities.
The Kenyan Ambassador in Thailand maintains daily communication with the rescued citizens, providing updates on repatriation efforts. The Ministry continues to advise citizens against seeking employment in Myanmar under deceptive circumstances, emphasizing the risks of human trafficking.
