Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has withdrawn two petitions he filed last year challenging his impeachment by Parliament, stating that the issues have been overtaken by events. This move comes after the swearing-in of Kithure Kindiki as the new Deputy President in October 2024, following Gachagua’s ouster.
Simultaneously, Gachagua has officially launched a new political party, the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP), aiming to provide an alternative to the ruling Kenya Kwanza administration. The launch event, held on May 15, 2025, was marked by vibrant displays and a call for political liberation. However, the event was also marred by chaos, with gunfire and disorder reported during the proceedings. The government has attributed the disturbances to disputes among Gachagua’s supporters over unpaid dues.
Despite withdrawing the impeachment petitions, Gachagua intends to continue with other legal avenues to challenge his ouster, focusing on the constitutionality of the process. The political landscape remains dynamic, with Gachagua’s next steps closely watched by both his supporters and critics.
