Tragic Loss as Kasipul MP Charles Were Gunned Down in Nairobi

Kasipul Member of Parliament Charles Ong’ondo Were was tragically shot dead on the evening of April 30, 2025, in Nairobi. The 51-year-old legislator was attacked near the City Mortuary roundabout along Ngong Road. According to reports, two gunmen on a motorcycle approached his vehicle and fired several shots at close range. Despite being rushed to Nairobi Hospital, Were was pronounced dead upon arrival.

Prior to the attack, Were had left Parliament around 6 p.m. and was heading towards Mbagathi. The assailants’ motive remains unclear, and investigations are ongoing. Authorities suspect the incident may have been a targeted assassination.

Were was serving his second term as MP for Kasipul and held positions as Vice-Chairperson of the Committee on Cohesion and a member of the Committee on Blue Economy and Irrigation. He was affiliated with the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party.

The news of his death has elicited an outpouring of tributes from political leaders and colleagues. ODM described the killing as a national tragedy and called for swift investigations. Deputy Party Leader Abdulswamad Nassir emphasized the need to avoid normalizing violence in the country. Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale condemned the act and demanded that those responsible face the full force of the law. Mumias East MP Peter Salasya urged the government to invest in better public surveillance systems to prevent such incidents.
