Eugene Wamalwa, leader of the Democratic Action Party of Kenya (DAP-K), is orchestrating a formidable political alliance aimed at unseating President William Ruto in the 2027 General Election. This coalition brings together influential figures who were instrumental in the 2002 campaign that propelled the late President Mwai Kibaki to power under the Kenya African National Union (KANU). Notably, the alliance includes leaders such as Wiper Democratic Movement’s Kalonzo Musyoka and former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
Wamalwa has expressed dissatisfaction with the current administration, accusing it of undermining key constitutional bodies and the criminal justice system. He emphasizes that his coalition seeks to offer Kenyans a better alternative, focusing on integrity and effective governance. He challenges voters to scrutinize leaders’ records, stating, “If you think I am corrupt, do not elect me.”
The coalition’s strategy includes a nationwide recruitment drive to field candidates across all electoral positions in the upcoming elections. This initiative aims to consolidate Western Kenya’s political influence, with Wamalwa asserting, “We believe we are the party of the future of the western.”
In a significant move, DAP-K has initiated the process of exiting the Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya Alliance Coalition. Wamalwa cites ideological differences and the need to align with like-minded partners as reasons for this departure.
As the 2027 elections approach, Wamalwa’s coalition is positioning itself as a serious contender, aiming to challenge President Ruto’s bid for re-election and reshape Kenya’s political landscape.
