Kenya’s hosting of the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) is already transforming the local football landscape. Even before kick-off, the tournament has triggered some of the most significant infrastructure developments seen in years, positioning the Football Kenya Federation Premier League (FKF-PL) as one of the biggest beneficiaries.
Among the headline upgrades is the confirmed installation of Video Assistant Referees (VAR) and Goal-line Technology at both Nyayo and Kasarani stadiums. These tools are set to modernize officiating in Kenya and bring transparency to key match decisions, especially in high-stakes encounters. This marks a historic moment for the local game, aligning Kenya with global football standards.

The improvements go beyond technology. The long-awaited return of night football is now a reality thanks to floodlight installations at select venues. With the ability to host 7pm midweek/weekend matches or late kick off matches , the FKF Premier League can now explore new matchday experiences, increased TV viewership, and commercial opportunities that come with prime-time scheduling.

Several training and secondary venues have been upgraded to meet CAF standards, with a lasting impact expected on the domestic scene. Kasarani Annex A and B have undergone a complete overhaul, transforming into high-quality playing surfaces that will serve both CHAN and league needs.

Renovations at Ulinzi Sports Complex and the Police Sacco Stadium have also been completed. Both facilities now boast modern, FIFA/CAF-standard pitches and will be used as official training bases for visiting CHAN teams. Their classy new look offers Nairobi-based clubs additional top-tier options for competitive fixtures, helping reduce the over-reliance on worn-out venues like Dandora Stadium.

These upgrades have positioned Nairobi-based clubs as some of the biggest beneficiaries, enjoying improved facilities and playing conditions that were once a luxury in local football.
All of this builds toward what promises to be a spectacular CHAN tournament. The ripple effects, however, will be felt far beyond its final whistle. High profile matches like the Mashemeji Derby are poised to reach new heights with better stadium facilities, potential VAR, Goal line Technology use, and the electric atmosphere of night matches.
