For many young boys growing up in the crowded streets of Obunga slums in Kisumu, football has always meant far more than just chasing a ball. It is an escape from hardship, a source of hope, and for some, the only visible pathway toward a different future. Few teams represent that dream better than Obunga FC, the grassroots side whose remarkable rise through the Safaricom Chapa Dimba tournament has transformed them into one of Kenya’s most inspiring community football stories.
When LTN Sports visited the club during training in Obunga Estate in Kisumu County, the reality behind the success quickly became visible. At Uzima University grounds, where the team currently trains, masons were busy putting up a perimeter wall around the facility while players warmed up on a dusty surface scattered with small patches of grass. It was not the kind of environment associated with champions, but the determination on the pitch told a different story.
As cameras rolled and training intensified, heavy rain suddenly poured down, forcing players to sprint toward a tiny 1 single room structure that doubles up as the team’s changing room. Within minutes, the pitch had turned muddy, effectively bringing the session to an early end. Yet even in those difficult conditions, there was a sense of purpose surrounding the squad.
That purpose is driven by a philosophy the club has embraced from the beginning “sports and education for behaviour change.”
Obunga FC have become more than just a football team. The club has evolved into a community project using football to keep young people focused, disciplined, and away from the social challenges that often affect informal settlements. Education remains central to that vision, with talented youngsters benefiting from scholarship opportunities while continuing to develop their football abilities.
Speaking to LTN Sports during the visit, coach Vincent reflected proudly on how the project continues to transform lives within the community.
“I’m proud Obunga has produced some of the best talents in the country. Our boy Brighton Onyona is now with record holders Gor Mahia, Armstrong is with Kariobangi Sharks, Sydney Ogutu is playing for Equity, and George Ogutu is at MOFA. This is enough motivation to current players as they get another big opportunity to showcase what they have,” he said.
His sentiments were echoed by team captain Brian Omondi, who said the players draw inspiration and motivation from former teammates who have moved on to greener pastures, particularly Brighton Onyona.
The rise of Obunga FC began attracting national attention during the 2023 Chapa Dimba campaign. Entering the competition for the first time, few expected the Kisumu’s Obunga slum -based side to make a deep run. But under determined leadership and fearless performances, the team stunned the region by winning the Nyanza regional title after trouncing Awendo Academy 2–1 in the final at Moi Stadium, Kisumu. Tyson Muluri and Clain Masaba scored the goals that announced Obunga’s arrival onto the national scene.
That breakthrough victory became the foundation for something even bigger.
A year later, Obunga FC completed a remarkable fairytale by winning the 2024 national title after edging PASC Langa in a tense penalty shootout at Jomo Kenyatta Stadium, Mamboleo. Goalkeeper Walter Odek emerged as one of the heroes with crucial saves that secured the historic triumph and elevated the club into national recognition.

The success has since opened doors for several players associated with the team. Brighton Onyona, now 19 years old, has established himself as a first-choice left back for Kpl giants Gor Mahia Fc and already earned a senior national team call-up. Armstrong Omondi secured a move to Kariobangi Sharks while George & Sydney Ogutu also earned opportunities with MOFA and Equity respectively.
Behind much of that growth has been coach Evans Oketch, who guided Obunga FC during both their regional and national Chapa Dimba triumphs. His influence stretched beyond Kenya after he became part of the Chapa Dimba All Stars technical setup that travelled to Huesca last year September for a week-long international training camp.
During the trip, the team trained at the Base Aragonesa de Fútbol under coaches from SD Huesca while also playing friendly matches against SD Huesca U23 and Zaragoza CFF.
Coach Vincent says the experience in Spain became a turning point in his coaching journey.
“I learned a lot from the training regime and football clinics with the Huesca coaches. Some of those ideas are what we have started applying here locally, and they have helped drive the team forward,” he explained.
As Chapa Dimba returns for another edition, Obunga FC now carry the pressure of being defending Kisumu County, Nyanza regional, and national champions. But inside the camp, there is belief rather than fear.
“Defending the title is very difficult, but we are prepared for it. We are going to come back and win again,” declared coach Evans confidently.
The club will also headline one of the major attractions during the Chapa Dimba launch in Kisumu with an exhibition clash against rivals Manyatta United. While outsiders may treat it as a friendly, emotions inside the Obunga camp suggest otherwise.
“We have bragging rights at stake. It’s more than an exhibition match,” Oketch added.
The rivalry between the two community clubs has steadily grown, fuelled by neighbourhood pride, passionate support, and the battle to dominate grassroots football in Kisumu.
Away from the pitch, however, the struggle to sustain the club remains constant. Obunga FC largely survive through community donations and support generated from tournaments such as Chapa Dimba. After winning the Ksh 1 million national prize money, the club leadership made a decision focused on long-term survival rather than short-term celebration.
Part of the money was used to purchase a second-hand 16-seater Nissan matatu, which now helps the team with transport logistics while also generating income through public service operations and private hiring.
“We used part of the money to purchase a second-hand matatu that helps us in various activities,” confirmed coach Vincent.
The team currently competes in the Kisumu Central Sub County League, where they sit at the top of the standings as they push for promotion to the County League , a step that would mark another historic milestone in the club’s rapid rise.
For coach Vincent, the story of Obunga FC represents something bigger than trophies alone.
“Successful football nations are built on a pyramid, and the grassroots form the foundation. Chapa Dimba has created an opportunity for talent identification and building a stronger national team,” he noted.
And perhaps that is the true significance of Obunga FC.
Beyond the medals, rivalries, and headlines, the club has become proof that talent exists everywhere , even in places often overlooked. Through structure, opportunity, education, and belief, a small community team from the streets of Obunga has shown that dreams born on dusty pitches can reach the national stage and beyond.
As another Chapa Dimba season begins, the dream continues in Obunga.
