The Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops (KCCB), criticized the government for failing to fulfill electoral promises and raised concerns about over-taxation, corruption, and human rights violations. The bishops accused the government of perpetuating a “culture of lies” and called for ethical leadership to address these pressing issues.
On November 17, 2024, President Ruto attended a Mass at Soweto Catholic Church in Nairobi, where he donated Ksh.600,000 to the church choir and Parish Missionary Council, and Ksh.2 million towards the construction of the parish priest’s house. He also pledged an additional Ksh.3 million for the construction project and promised to provide a bus to the parish. Governor Sakaja contributed Ksh.200,000 during the same service.
Archbishop Philip Anyolo of Nairobi announced that these contributions would be returned, citing ethical concerns and the need to prevent the Church from being used for political purposes. He stated that the Church strongly discourages using events such as fundraisers and gatherings as platforms for political self-promotion. The Archbishop emphasized that politicians are welcome to attend church for spiritual nourishment as ordinary Christians but should refrain from leveraging their positions for political gain.
