Bungoma Governor Urges Farmers to Use Subsidized Inputs Responsibly

Bungoma Governor Kenneth Lusaka has reiterated his warning to farmers against selling subsidized farm inputs provided by the county government. Speaking on Radio Citizen, Lusaka emphasized that these inputs are intended to empower vulnerable farmers and enhance food security, not for resale at low prices. He stated, “The County provides these farm inputs to help farmers boost production and enhance food security. It is unfortunate that some are misusing the opportunity by selling them.”

This caution aligns with previous statements by Lusaka, who has consistently urged beneficiaries to utilize the free inputs for increased food production rather than selling them. He has warned that those found selling the inputs would face serious consequences.

The county government has been proactive in supporting farmers, with plans to distribute subsidized fertilizers and seeds to over 22,000 farmers in the current planting season. This initiative aims to improve maize yields and address challenges such as unpredictable weather patterns and rising food demand. County Executive Committee member for Agriculture and Cooperatives, Hebert Kibunguchy, highlighted the importance of this subsidy in boosting food production.

However, the distribution has faced challenges, including the circulation of counterfeit agricultural inputs. Lusaka has criticized the perennial shortage of quality fertilizers, which has led to chaotic scenes of farmers scrambling for limited supplies. He called for timely delivery of subsidized fertilizers to National Cereals and Produce Board depots ahead of the planting season to avoid delays that could compromise harvests.

To further support farmers, the county has deployed extension officers across all 45 wards, equipped with motorbikes to improve mobility and service delivery. These officers provide training on modern agricultural techniques, pest management, and sustainable farming practices. Farmers are also encouraged to diversify crops to mitigate risks associated with climate change.

Governor Lusaka’s administration remains committed to enhancing agricultural productivity and food security in Bungoma County. Farmers are urged to responsibly utilize the provided inputs and adhere to guidelines to ensure the success of these initiatives.
