Uganda Cranes Pull Off Miracle in Namboole as South Africa Crash Out in CHAN Thriller

A night of raw emotion and footballing theatre unfolded at the Nelson Mandela Stadium in Namboole, where Uganda Cranes came back from the dead to draw 3-3 with South Africa in their final Group C fixture ; a result that sent them through to the CHAN 2024 quarterfinals and left Bafana Bafana devastated, eliminated despite leading 3-1 with just minutes left on the clock.

Uganda needed only a point to advance, while South Africa came into the tie with no room for error. The visitors started brightly, dominating early possession with fluid passing, showing glimpses of classic tiki-taka football. Keagan Dolly and Kutumela were at the heart of South Africa’s creative rhythm, and the pressure on Uganda was relentless. But the Cranes absorbed the intensity, relying on fast counterattacks through Kakande and Okello.

Midway through the first half, Uganda nearly struck first through Allan Okello’s individual brilliance in the box. His effort was blocked, and the rebound fell to Watambala, whose shot was kept out by South Africa’s goalkeeper. Moments later, Bafana responded with a well-placed cross from Dolly, but Keegan Johannes’ header went wide after he beat the keeper.

The opener finally came in the 35th minute, and it belonged to the hosts. Uganda hit on a deadly counterattack, with Kakande sprinting down the flank before squaring the ball for Jude Ssemugabi, who swept it home. The stadium erupted in celebration, and Uganda carried their 1-0 lead into halftime despite South Africa’s superior possession.

The second half began with controversy. In the 52nd minute, South Africa thought they had equalized through Mphahlele, only for the goal to be flagged offside by the linesman. A lengthy VAR check followed, and to the dismay of the home crowd, the goal was awarded & scoreline leveled at 1–1 . The momentum swung instantly, and the shift was felt immediately.

Just eight minutes later, in the 60th, Bafana Bafana completed the turnaround. Kutumela latched onto a loose ball and finished smartly to silence the stadium. Uganda looked rattled and responded in the 64th minute with their first substitution, Ivan Ahimbisibwe coming on for Mpande to bolster midfield structure.

South Africa remained in control, capitalizing on Uganda’s desperation. In the 68th minute, they continued to dictate the tempo, and Uganda’s frustration began to show. Their tackles became increasingly rash, and in the 75th minute, Hassan Mukundane was shown a yellow card after a heavy challenge in midfield.

With time running out and the Cranes needing inspiration, coach Morley Byekwaso made another change in the 77th minute, introducing Yunus Sentamu for Kakande. But Uganda’s problems deepened two minutes later when South Africa were forced to make a change of their own ; Majadibodu replacing the injured Mphahlele.

In the 83rd minute, South Africa struck what seemed to be the final blow. Keagan Dolly picked out Ndlondlo in space, and the midfielder rifled home Bafana Bafana’s third goal. At 3-1, with just minutes left, it looked like Uganda were heading out.

But the Cranes were not done. In the 88th minute, they were handed a lifeline. A handball in the box gifted Uganda a penalty, and Allan Okello stepped up with composure to slot it past the keeper. Immediately after scoring, he was withdrawn for Usama, while South Africa reacted by taking off Keagan Dolly for Masuku in an attempt to close out the game.

As the clock hit 90, South Africa made another time-stalling substitution, Makarine replacing Ndlondlo. The pressure mounted as Uganda surged forward in waves. Bafana Bafana’s defensive line grew increasingly nervous, and in the fifth minute of stoppage time, two quick yellow cards were shown. One to Mashego, the other to Maema , both booked for time-wasting and dissent.

Then came the climax. In the 96th minute, Uganda were awarded a second penalty after chaos in the box. This time, Rogers Torach stepped up, and the roar that followed his successful conversion was deafening. From 1-3 down to 3-3 in under ten minutes , Uganda had pulled off a miracle.

There was time for one final substitution; South Africa brought on Tlolane for Mashego in the 97th minute ,but it was already over. The final whistle was met with scenes of utter contrast: Ugandan players collapsed in celebration, while Bafana Bafana’s stars broke down in disbelief, some in tears. Their CHAN campaign was over
