South Korea’s opposition Democratic Party has called on the Constitutional Court to expedite its ruling on the impeachment of suspended President Yoon Suk Yeol, describing the delay as “irresponsible” and a source of increasing social unrest. The party argues that the prolonged uncertainty is deepening societal divisions and hindering effective governance.

Yoon was impeached by the opposition-controlled National Assembly in December following his controversial declaration of martial law. The martial law, intended to suppress opposition to his administration, was lifted hours later but led to significant political turmoil. Since then, the Constitutional Court has been deliberating on whether to uphold the impeachment, with no final decision reached.

The ongoing uncertainty has sparked massive rallies across the country. In Seoul, rival demonstrations have taken place, with anti-Yoon protesters demanding his removal and supporters calling for his reinstatement. Police estimates placed the anti-Yoon turnout in the tens of thousands, while organizers claimed 1.1 million attendees.
