Voice of the People Silenced in Shadows of the Ballot

A prominent Tanzanian Catholic priest and outspoken government critic was violently attacked in Dar es Salaam on Wednesday, May 1, 2025. Father Dr. Charles Kitima, Secretary General of the Tanzania Episcopal Conference (TEC), was assaulted at the TEC headquarters in Kurasini, hours after a video of him condemning electoral malpractices went viral on social media. In the video, he denounced “lawlessness” and called for electoral justice ahead of the October 2025 elections.

The attack occurred amid escalating political tensions and growing unrest among civil society and religious institutions. Religious leaders, including those from the Catholic and Baptist communities, have been increasingly vocal about electoral integrity and constitutional concerns. Bishop Antony Mlyashimba of the Baptist Church has warned that without sweeping electoral reforms and the establishment of an independent electoral commission, the upcoming general elections could deepen national divisions.

Dr. Kitima, known for his strong advocacy for social justice and democratic accountability, was hospitalized following the assault. Police have arrested a suspect, and the TEC has called for a full investigation. Civil society organizations have condemned the attack, viewing it as part of a disturbing trend of silencing dissent.

The incident has captured international attention, with human rights groups urging the Tanzanian government to uphold freedom of expression and ensure the safety of all citizens. As the nation moves toward the October elections, the violent targeting of one of its most respected voices has cast a dark shadow over the democratic process.
