Talanta Stadium–Nyayo Stadium Railway Project Gains Momentum Ahead of AFCON 2027

The Kenyan government has stepped up preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) by advancing plans for a new commuter railway link connecting Nairobi Central Station, Nyayo National Stadium and the upcoming Talanta Sports City.

The project will feature a new commuter rail station at Nyayo National Stadium and a railway station within the Talanta Sports Complex, providing football fans with a faster, safer and more convenient way to travel to and from match venues during the continental tournament.

According to Kenya Railways, the new rail spur will run from Nairobi Central Station through the Nyayo area and Kibera before terminating at Talanta Sports City. The line is expected to significantly reduce road congestion on match days while enhancing Nairobi’s commuter transport network.

Raila Odinga International Stadium at the Talanta City Complex will host AFCON 2027 matches, while Nyayo National Stadium has been designated as an official training venue due to its strategic location. The new railway connection will seamlessly link both facilities with Nairobi Central Station, improving accessibility for players, officials and supporters.

The railway project forms part of the government’s broader strategy to integrate transport, urban planning and security infrastructure ahead of AFCON 2027, one of the largest sporting events Kenya has hosted in decades. Unlike previous commuter rail upgrades in Nairobi, which largely focused on rehabilitating existing lines, the Nyayo–Talanta rail link represents a rare new urban extension being developed to meet the tournament deadline.

Kenya Railways has not yet disclosed the project’s cost, funding arrangements but construction timeline is expected to be right in time before the Afcon scheduled for 19th June to 17th July 2027.
