NSL Round 8 Recap: Migori Youth Tighten Their Grip as Kisumu AllStars Claim First Win and 3K FC Triumph in Two-Day Thriller

Round 8 of the FKF National Super League delivered drama across two days, from grinding stalemates to shock upsets, resurgent performances and even a match split across two different grounds and two different dates. The weekend confirmed Migori Youth’s growing authority at the summit, revived Kisumu AllStars’ hopes, halted Kibera Black Stars’ momentum and showcased the emerging resilience of 3K FC, who once again proved they are no pushovers.

Saturday opened with a cagey meeting at the Vapor Grounds where Equity Bank and Naivas cancelled each other out in a goalless stalemate. It was a match of half-chances and disciplined defending, with Equity unable to carry the ruthless edge they showed against Kibera while Naivas’ attacking threat, led by three-goal marksman Emmanuel Lunalyo, was well contained.

In Ngong, all eyes were on the KIHBT Grounds where Migori Youth travelled to Nairobi City Stars. And the league leaders played with the assurance of a side intent on holding their position at the top. Migori settled quickly, created the sharper openings and were rewarded moments before halftime when Geoffrey Odira was tripped in the box. Syphas Otieno, calm as ever, rolled the penalty home for his sixth of the season. Within two minutes of the restart, Fredrick Ologi doubled the advantage with a beautifully hit strike that bent into the far corner. From there, Migori controlled the pace, stayed disciplined at the back and saw out a 2–0 win that reaffirmed their growing maturity. The victory pushed them clear at the summit and underlined once again why they remain one of the early pace-setters.

In Kisumu, the mood was entirely different as Kisumu All-Stars finally found their spark, registering first win of the season . The bottom-placed side stunned joint leaders Mombasa United 2–0 at Moi Stadium, scoring early through Wycliffe Opuro in the 19th minute before Billy Owuor doubled the lead soon after the restart. All-Stars even had a chance to stretch the scoreline further, only for Calvin Ayot to miss from the penalty spot. Even so, the performance carried the defiance the Kisumu faithful have long been waiting for, dragging Mombasa United back to earth after their strong start to the campaign.

At Gusii Stadium, Gucha Stars delivered one of their most assured performances of the season with a 2–1 win over Nzoia Sugar. The hosts struck twice before the interval , first through Vincent Nyabuto in the 29th minute, then via a thunderous finish from Duke Kurio seven minutes later. Nzoia attempted a late push, pulling one back from the penalty spot through Obed in the 81st minute, but Gucha’s organisation over the ninety minutes earned them a much-needed victory.

Mamboleo Stadium staged a lively contest as MOFA edged Fortune Sacco 2–1. Laban Otieno opened the scoring inside 18 minutes before captain Joseph Bate made it 2–0 shortly after with a composed finish. Fortune Sacco responded through their own captain, Henry Gachoki, who powered in a header from a corner in the 61st minute. MOFA held firm, however, to claim a spirited win that lifts their confidence heading into the next round.

Sunday produced its own twists, beginning in Eldoret where Soy United stunned Kibera Black Stars with a 2–0 victory. A 19th-minute own goal unsettled Kibera before Clinton Orifa struck again in the 33rd minute to deepen the blow. For Kibera, who had come into the weekend sitting in the top four, the defeat compounded last weekend’s setback against Equity, raising questions they must answer quickly. For Soy United, it was a result full of fight and purpose as they continue to show why they cannot be taken lightly.

There was little to separate Darajani Gogo and Mwatate United, who played out a goalless draw in Karen. Kabati Youth and MCF followed suit with another 0–0 contest in Thika, a match marked more by defensive discipline than attacking adventure.

In Kisumu, FC Talanta registered one of the most confident wins of the round, beating Vihiga United 2–0 courtesy of early and late first-half goals. Brian Lusamukha put Talanta ahead in the 12th minute before Brian Nyambane made it 2–0 just before the break, sealing the visitors’ dominance and showing a sharpness that had been missing in previous weeks.

Round 8 concluded in almost cinematic fashion as 3K FC defeated Luanda Villa 2–0 ,a match started on Sunday afternoon in Mumboha, abandoned in the 40th minute due to heavy rain and thunderstorms, and completed on Monday morning at Moi Stadium in Kisumu. Before the downpour, 3K had already taken the lead through Oscar Juma’s firm header from a well-worked move in the 15th minute. The rain only added to the drama, with the match postponed in chaotic scenes as the pitch became unplayable.

When play resumed on Monday, 3K picked up exactly where they had left off. Captain Dante struck early in the second half to make it 2–0 after a clever pass from in-form Eugene Ateya. From there, 3K controlled the tempo, threatened repeatedly through Owen, Mwalimu and Selassie, and forced Luanda into a desperate defensive stand that eventually ended in a red card. The controlled, confident finish from the Embu-based side completed one of the most unusual but memorable wins of the season so far.
