Ruto’s Ex-ICC Lawyer Katwa Kigen Pulls Out of IEBC Race to Avoid “Unnecessary Diversion”

Lawyer Katwa Kigen, best known for representing President William Ruto at the International Criminal Court (ICC) during the 2007/2008 post-election violence case, has withdrawn from the ongoing selection process for commissioners of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).

Kigen pulled out just hours before he was scheduled to appear before the IEBC Selection Panel on Today . In a statement, he cited concerns about public perception and his suitability for the role, referencing his past ties with President Ruto. He said he wanted to avoid being a source of “unnecessary diversion” from the commission’s crucial mandate.

The withdrawal follows public scrutiny and questions about his impartiality due to his high-profile legal defense of the president. Kigen’s exit now narrows the field of candidates being considered for one of the most sensitive electoral positions in the country.

The IEBC Selection Panel acknowledged his decision and will continue interviewing the remaining shortlisted candidates.
