ODM leader Raila Odinga has called for a crucial Parliamentary Group (PG) meeting this morning to discuss preparations for the party’s 20th anniversary celebrations and to set the agenda for the resumption of parliamentary sittings.
The meeting, which brings together ODM legislators from both the National Assembly and Senate, is scheduled to begin at 8:30 a.m. at Argyle Grand Hotel along Mombasa Road.
In a memo dated September 18, National Assembly Minority Leader Junet Mohamed invited MPs and Senators, stating that the gathering would address key party matters before Parliament reconvenes on Tuesday after the long recess.
“As you are aware, our party, the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), will be celebrating its 20th anniversary from October 9 to 12, 2025. In preparation for this important milestone, you are hereby invited to attend an ODM parliamentary group meeting,” Junet’s memo read.
Junet added that Raila will personally chair the session, with discussions expected to focus on anniversary preparations, parliamentary business, and other issues of strategic importance to the party.
ODM has already rolled out a series of pre-anniversary events, with activities held last weekend in Wajir County. This Friday, Raila is set to lead a major rally in Kisii, where delegates and supporters from across the Nyanza and Western regions will converge at Gusii Stadium for cultural and political celebrations.
However, the meeting comes at a delicate time for ODM, which has recently been grappling with internal divisions over its stance on President William Ruto’s broad-based government.
A group of youthful legislators, led by ODM Secretary General and Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, has been openly opposing the arrangement, coalescing around the “Kenya Moja” faction. MPs Anthony Kibagendi, Babu Owino, Caleb Amisi, Obadia Barongo, and Clive Gisairo have joined Sifuna in pushing back against cooperation with the government.
On the other hand, leaders such as Junet Mohamed, Peter Kaluma, George Aladwa, and Sam Atandi have thrown their weight behind the broad-based agenda and expressed support for President Ruto’s re-election bid in 2027.
The ODM PG meeting is therefore expected to be pivotal in forging consensus within the party and setting a unified tone as Parliament resumes.
