President Ruto Defends Kithure Kindiki Amid Criticism of Being a “Yes-Man”

Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has addressed ongoing criticisms suggesting he is merely a “yes man” to President William Ruto. Responding to these allegations, Kindiki emphasized his independence and clarified his role as the President’s principal assistant. He stated, “I am my own man,” further explaining that his responsibilities do not include opposing the President but involve supporting and advising him when sought. Kindiki referenced his oath of office, highlighting his duty to provide counsel faithfully when requested.

These remarks come after former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua publicly questioned Kindiki’s capacity to advocate for ordinary citizens, implying that his appointment limited his autonomy. Gachagua suggested that Kindiki’s role was confined to executing directives, thereby reducing his ability to challenge or influence presidential policies.

President Ruto has expressed confidence in Kindiki’s abilities, stating that he values his deputy’s intellect and eloquence. The President noted that Kindiki’s support is crucial in articulating government policies and addressing areas where Ruto felt his voice had been solitary.
