KBL Pumps KES 54 Million into Tana River Conservation Ahead of World Water Day

In a move to secure Kenya’s water future, Kenya Breweries Limited (KBL) has injected KES 54 million into a partnership with the Upper Tana-Nairobi Water Fund Trust (UTNWF Trust) to ramp up conservation efforts at the Upper Tana watershed. This initiative is set to tackle water scarcity, boost accessibility, and strengthen the resilience of the vital Tana River basin.

“Our partnership with the Upper Tana-Nairobi Water Fund Trust reflects our dedication to protecting Kenya’s key resources. By working together, we are ensuring clean and safe water remains available for communities, supports agricultural livelihoods, and sustains the environment,” said Eric Kiniti, EABL’s Group Corporate Relations Director.

The Upper Tana watershed is the lifeline of Kenya’s capital and energy sector, supplying 95% of Nairobi’s water and generating 65% of the country’s hydropower. With rapid urbanization straining resources, ensuring long-term water security is no longer an option—it’s a necessity.

“As Nairobi’s population surges, securing sustainable water access is paramount. This partnership between KBL and UTNWF Trust is a game-changer for Nairobi’s residents, businesses, and industries,” emphasized Eng. Nahashon Njuguna, MD and CEO of Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Company.

This latest investment adds to KBL’s growing footprint in environmental sustainability:

  • KES 190 million pumped into Upper Tana watershed conservation in 2024.
  • Over KES 850 million invested in water recovery plants in Nairobi and Kisumu, reclaiming 1,968 cubic meters of water daily.
  • Extensive capacity-building, infrastructure development, and policy advocacy to drive long-term impact.

“Conservation is a collective effort. With KBL’s continued support, we can build resilient ecosystems, protect vital water sources, and leave a lasting impact on both the environment and local communities,” noted Eng. Michael Thuita, Chairman of UTNWF Trust.

As Kenya gears up for World Water Day on March 22, this partnership sets the tone for action in tackling the country’s pressing water challenges. The success of the Tana River Basin highlights the power of public-private partnerships in shaping a sustainable future—one drop at a time.
