Kenyan striker Moses Shumah is rapidly turning his debut season in Zambia into one of the most compelling stories of the current campaign. The 23-year-old forward has hit a remarkable scoring streak that is not only propelling Power Dynamos toward another league title but also establishing him as one of the most lethal strikers in the Zambian Super League.

Shumah delivered his biggest statement yet in Ndola when he struck a stunning hat-trick to inspire Power Dynamos to a dramatic 3–2 victory over ZESCO United. The win strengthened Dynamos’ position at the top of the Zambian MTN Super League standings and further reinforced their growing momentum as they look to defend the title they won last season.

The hat-trick was historic in its own right. Shumah became only the second player in the league this season to register a treble, joining Red Arrows forward Sadam Phiri as the only players to achieve the feat during the 2025/26 campaign. Yet the performance was not an isolated flash of brilliance but part of a growing run of form that has taken the league by surprise.

Just days before the ZESCO clash, Shumah had already found the net twice in a high-profile encounter against Red Arrows. Those goals, combined with the hat-trick in Ndola, mean the Kenyan striker has scored five times in his last two matches. His tally for the season has now risen to 12 goals, a surge that has dramatically reshaped the race for the Golden Boot.

The scoring burst has seen him overtake Red Arrows striker Albert Kangwanda, who had been leading the goal charts for much of the season. Kangwanda scored a dramatic last-minute winner in Gameweek 22 but has only managed one goal in the last two rounds of matches. In contrast, Shumah’s five-goal explosion across the same period has pushed him to the summit of the scoring standings.

For many followers of the Zambian league, the Kenyan forward’s rise is beginning to evoke memories of Jesse Were, another Kenyan striker who left a lasting mark during his time at ZESCO United and eventually claimed the league’s Golden Boot. Shumah now appears determined to follow in those footsteps and perhaps write his own chapter in the competition’s history.

His success in Zambia did not come out of nowhere. Before crossing the border, Shumah had already established himself as one of the most dangerous forwards in the Kenyan game. The former Kakamega Homeboyz striker finished the 2025 FKF Premier League season as the Golden Boot winner with 17 goals, a performance that quickly attracted interest from clubs outside the country.

That prolific campaign ultimately earned him a move worth approximately Ksh 5 million to Zambian champions Power Dynamos ahead of the 2025/26 season. Kakamega Homeboyz agreed to the transfer fee, allowing the striker to pursue a new challenge in one of the continent’s most competitive leagues.

The timing of the transfer sparked debate back home. It came during a period when Kenya was hosting the African Nations Championship (CHAN), a tournament reserved strictly for players active in their domestic leagues. By choosing to complete the move to Zambia, Shumah effectively ruled himself out of the competition, a decision that divided opinion among Kenyan football followers.

Months later, however, his performances in Zambia are beginning to shift the narrative. Shumah has settled quickly into life at Power Dynamos and has become one of the club’s most decisive attacking weapons. Among his 12 league goals so far are braces against Konkola Blades, NAPSA Stars, and Green Buffaloes, before the headline-grabbing hat-trick against ZESCO United.

His impact has also made him a fan favorite in Zambia. Supporters have even given him a nickname, “Mack 2,” due to his resemblance to the popular Zambian musician Macky 2, further cementing his growing popularity among Dynamos fans.

As the international window approaches, Shumah’s name is once again surfacing in discussions surrounding the Harambee Stars squad. Kenya is scheduled to participate in the FIFA Series matches in Rwanda later this month, beginning with a clash against Estonia on March 27 before facing either Rwanda or Grenada.

With the national team preparing for those fixtures, attention will inevitably turn to head coach Benni McCarthy and whether the in-form striker will earn a call-up. Shumah’s relationship with the national team setup has been complicated in recent months, particularly after he did not heed an earlier call during preparations for CHAN.

The upcoming fixtures could offer an opportunity to move past that episode. If form is the ultimate currency in football selection, Shumah’s recent exploits in Zambia are difficult to overlook.
