The football world has been left in shock following the sudden passing of Turkish-German coach Engin Firat, who died of a reported heart attack at Istanbul Airport while traveling from Beirut to Adana.

Firat is widely remembered for his tenure as head coach of the Harambee Stars, Kenya’s national football team, a position he held until stepping down in December 2024. During his time with Kenya, he worked closely with local talents, leaving a lasting impact on the national setup.

On February 8, 2026, Firat had been officially appointed as head coach of Lebanese Premier League side Nejmeh SC, reuniting with Kenyan players Austin Odhiambo, Anthony Akumu, and Masud Juma. His sudden death comes just weeks after taking charge of the club, leaving both Kenyan and Lebanese football communities in mourning.

Nejmeh SC shared an official statement on their Facebook page, expressing deep sorrow over Firat’s death:

With great sadness, Nejmeh SC mourns the passing of our first-team coach, Captain Engin Firat, who died from a sudden heart attack at Istanbul Airport on his way to Adana, just hours after leaving Beirut to return to his country. During his time with the club, the late coach was known for his professional commitment and high morals, leaving a positive mark on the team and within the Nejmeh family. The club management, technical and administrative staff, players, and supporters extend their heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones, praying that God grants him mercy and inspires them with patience and solace.
