African football has been thrust into unprecedented territory after CAF’s Appeal Board dramatically overturned the result of the 2025 continental final, stripping Senegal of victory and officially declaring Morocco as champions months after the match was played.

What was once settled on the pitch on January 18 has now been rewritten in the boardroom, closing one of the most controversial chapters in the history of the competition.

On the night, Senegal appeared to have held their nerve in a tense and chaotic final. The match had already been clouded by controversy after a Senegal goal was ruled out under questionable circumstances, setting the tone for a contest filled with tension and suspicion. As the game edged into stoppage time, Morocco were awarded a penalty deep into added time, a decision that would trigger the defining moment of the final.

Senegal players reacted furiously. In protest, they refused to continue and walked off the pitch, leaving the stadium in confusion for nearly 15 minutes. The prolonged delay disrupted the flow of the match entirely, with officials scrambling to restore order while emotions boiled over.Eventually, Senegal returned to the field and the penalty was taken. Brahim Díaz stepped up with an audacious panenka attempt, but the effort failed, handing Senegal a lifeline at a critical moment. Sensing the shift, Senegal pushed forward and, just minutes later, Pape Gueye struck what seemed to be the winning goal in the 94th minute, sealing what was believed to be a historic triumph.

But the story did not end with the final whistle.In the weeks that followed, Morocco lodged a formal protest, arguing that Senegal’s actions during the stoppage amounted to a breach of competition regulations. While an earlier disciplinary ruling had sanctioned both teams without altering the result, Morocco pursued the matter further through the appeals process.

Now, CAF’s Appeal Board has delivered a decision that changes everything.

In its ruling, the Appeal Board found that Senegal’s conduct fell within the scope of Articles 82 and 84 of the competition regulations, which govern team behaviour and forfeiture. By leaving the pitch and interrupting the match, Senegal were deemed to have effectively abandoned the game, regardless of their eventual return.

As a result, the match has been officially recorded as a 3–0 victory in favour of Morocco, with Senegal ruled to have forfeited the final.The decision also set aside the earlier findings of the Disciplinary Board, marking a significant shift in CAF’s interpretation of the events and reinforcing the authority of the regulations governing match continuity and conduct.

Beyond the reversal of the result, the Appeal Board also revisited several sanctions. Moroccan midfielder Ismaël Saibari saw his punishment reduced, with his suspension cut to two matches, one of which is suspended, and his previous fine lifted. Financial penalties imposed on Morocco for ball boy misconduct and the use of lasers were also reduced, although the fine related to interference with the VAR review process was upheld in full.

Despite these adjustments, the central outcome remains the most consequential. A final that had been decided in the dying minutes of play has now been redefined by regulatory interpretation, with Morocco elevated to champions not through a late goal, but through the application of the rules.
