Migori County to Establish Modern Landing Site to Reduce Fish Loss

The Migori County administration has begun building of a sophisticated fish landing station with a cold storage facility on God Kachola Beach.

The cold storage facility, projected to cost Ksh. 150 million, is designed to alleviate post-harvest losses incurred by the fisher folk group.

Last week, officers from the county department of agriculture held a public participation exercise on the beach to gather feedback from the fishing community.

Lucas Museda, a Migori county executive committee member in the Department of Agriculture, Livestock, and Fisheries Management, stated that the cooling facility, which is set to begin building soon, will alleviate the region’s post-harvest difficulties.

Museda stated that the fisher folk community has suffered from post-harvest losses caused by a lack of cooling facilities at the beach.

The CECM Agriculture, Livestock, and Fisheries administration stated that the county government is also building fish preservation facilities in important towns like as Isebania, Migori, and Rongo.

Meanwhile, fisherman on the troubled Migingo Island urge the government to help them obtain fish preservation facilities.

Juma Mbaya, secretary of the Migingo Beach Management Unit, stated that the cooling facilities they had been using were recently destroyed by severe tides that affected areas of the island.

Mbaya stated that due to a lack of storage facilities on Migingo Island, they were compelled to ship their fish to dry land immediately in order to market them.
