KPL Gameweek 4: Gor Mahia’s Emotional Win Headlines Dramatic Weekend of Football

After a week’s break, the SportPesa Premier League returned with passion, drama, and major talking points across all venues as Gameweek 4 produced emotional moments, shock results, and a managerial casualty.

Friday’s curtain-raiser in Awendo saw Sugar Millers’ Mara Sugar and Bidco United settle for a 0–0 stalemate in a match that failed to spark much excitement. Both sides struggled to convert possession into clear chances, leaving them to share the spoils.

Saturday’s fixtures, however, came alive ; starting in Bukhungu where 10-man Kakamega Homeboyz produced a spirited 3–1 victory over Ulinzi Stars. Henry Omollo’s 25th-minute header opened the scoring after a fine delivery from Bonface Onyango. Just after the restart, Josphat Lopaga squared the ball for Hillary Otieno to double the lead, giving Homeboyz a commanding cushion. Ulinzi’s Bonface Muchiri briefly restored hope with a curling free kick in the 63rd minute, but their momentum faded after Omollo was sent off in the 77th. Despite being a man down, Homeboyz sealed the result through a well-taken free kick by Essie in the 80th minute. The loss proved costly for Ulinzi coach Danstun Nyaudo who was relieved of his duties with official announcement made on Monday morning.

At Kasarani Annex, newly promoted side APS Bomet stunned Kariobangi Sharks with a late comeback to claim a 2–1 win , their first of the campaign. Sharks had taken an early 8th-minute lead through Markvivan Kesa and looked on course for victory until the final 10 minutes. In the 82nd minute, Duncan “Cantona” Mogasa struck a sublime free kick to level matters before Phillip Wasai completed the turnaround two minutes later. The result ended Bomet’s three-game winless run and handed Sharks their Second defeat of the season.

The late kickoff at Ulinzi Complex featured AFC Leopards against KCB in a high-stakes clash. Leopards, under pressure after three straight draws, finally broke their winless streak with a 2–1 triumph. Bonface Munyendo capitalized on an early scramble in the first minute to give Ingwe the lead. KCB fought back through Francis Kairo in the 55th minute, but substitute Christopher Kaloti’s 71st-minute strike from Ronald Sichenje’s cross sealed the points for Leopards and offered brief relief to coach Fred Ambani.

Sunday’s matches brought more twists. In Kisii, Mathare United pulled off the shock of the weekend with a 1–0 away win against Shabana FC. Dennis Okoth’s 39th-minute strike, a swerving left-footed shot that caught the goalkeeper off guard, earned the Slum Boys their first away win of the season. Despite Shabana’s dominance and an early disallowed goal from Wycliffe Omondi, Mathare held firm thanks to goalkeeper Kevin Ouru’s outstanding saves. The defeat marked Shabana’s second consecutive home loss, a first in two seasons.

At the SportPesa Arena Murang’a , Tusker finally broke their winless streak with a hard-fought 1–0 victory over Murang’a Seal. The Brewers had to dig deep before their talisman, Eric Kapaito, delivered the winner in the 79th minute , his first of the campaign and a reminder of his two-time MVP and Golden Boot pedigree. The result handed Tusker their first win after four attempts while Murang’a continued to struggle, suffering their fourth straight defeat.

The weekend’s emotional highlight, however, belonged to Gor Mahia F.C.. Playing their first match since the passing of their long-serving Patron, Raila Amolo Odinga, the defending champions delivered a performance full of spirit and symbolism. Before kickoff, players and officials held a touching tribute lap with the ODM @20 trophy as fans waved banners and chanted “Jowi!” in remembrance. Gor went on to beat Posta Rangers F.C. 3–0 at Nyayo Stadium, with goals from Ben Stanley Omondi, Austin Odhiambo, and Felix Oluoch. The result ended Rangers’ unbeaten run and lifted Gor to third on the table, just a point off the top but on a day where football was secondary, the emotional tribute to their Patron was what defined the afternoon.
