Kisumu Rugby Football Club chairman Dr. Gabriel Ouma has expressed deep admiration for the talent showcased in this year’s National Sevens Circuit, singling out one standout performer; Victor Mola; as a player he is keen to lure back to the lakeside club.
Speaking during an interview with Lolwe Television Network (LTN) Sports ahead of the final leg of the circuit, the Dala 7s, Dr. Ouma commended the current format of the Kenya Rugby Union (KRU), which mandates that players must participate in the domestic circuit to be considered for national team selection. He believes this directive has not only improved the competitiveness of the tournament but also provided a platform for unknown talent to shine.
“This season has brought out breakthrough players whom nobody really expected or even knew about,” Dr. Ouma noted. “There is a real selection headache for the national team selectors, and rightly so. The circuit is no longer a walk in the park for the elite players.”
One of the names firmly on his radar is Victor Mola, currently the top try scorer in four out of the five legs completed. As a Strathmore Leos player, Mola has lit up the circuit with electrifying pace and clinical finishing, reinforcing his status as one of the most exciting prospects in Kenyan rugby today.
But for Dr. Ouma, Mola is more than just a rising star ,he is family. “What most people may not know is that Victor Mola is a former Kisumu RFC player. He started his journey here, and we have a special bond,” he revealed. “In fact, he was the Most Valuable Player at the Dala 7s in 2023, and there’s even a photo of him receiving that award in a Kisumu RFC jersey.”
The chairman disclosed that Mola left Kisumu RFC to pursue his university education at Strathmore, which made him eligible to play for Strathmore Leos. Now, with the final leg of the circuit bringing the action back to Kisumu, Dr. Ouma is not hiding his ambition.“
Once he completes his studies, I will definitely explore how to bring him back home. He has grown, matured, and become one of the finest players in the country. It would be a full-circle moment to have him back where it all began.”
As Kisumu prepares to host the Dala 7s, the return of a local hero could be on the horizon and the dream is alive in Dr. Ouma’s heart.
