Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) is set to make medical history with its first-ever craniofacial reconstruction surgery, scheduled for September 25, 2025. The landmark procedure will be performed on 7-year-old Ian Baraka, a young boy who sustained life-altering facial injuries after a gunshot wound in 2023.
Ian was tragically caught in the crossfire of a bandit attack that left him with a severely disfigured jaw and extensive damage to the lower face. He was rushed to KNH, where he received emergency care and was stabilised in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Since then, he has undergone multiple preliminary surgeries and intensive rehabilitation to prepare for the complex reconstruction ahead.
During a press briefing held on Thursday, September 12, KNH Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon Dr. Andrew Okiriamu shared more details on Ian’s condition and the intricate procedure planned.
“The bullet entered through the lower part of his face and exited through the front, damaging not just his jaw, but also affecting his eyes,” Dr. Okiriamu explained. “We’ve already stabilised the lower jaw, but reconstructing the upper jaw has proven to be far more complex.”
To overcome these challenges, the KNH surgical team will utilise cutting-edge, patient-specific implants designed to grow with Ian over time. These advanced implants aim to restore both facial function and appearance, while also supporting natural bone development.
The upcoming surgery will involve a multidisciplinary team of surgeons, anesthesiologists, and rehabilitation experts. It is expected to take several hours and marks a major step forward in KNH’s surgical capabilities.

Following the surgery, Ian will continue to receive comprehensive, long-term care, including physical therapy, psychological support, and follow-up procedures to aid in his recovery and facial development.
