A charged Sunday afternoon at Nyayo National Stadium delivered the full spectacle expected of the 98th Mashemeji Derby, with every seat taken and thousands more squeezed into the terraces as Gor Mahia hosted AFC Leopards in a clash heavy with history, tension and expectation. The rivalry carried its familiar electricity, and even before kickoff, the noise inside the stadium made it clear that this was no ordinary league match.
Both sides began with measured intensity, settling into their rhythm as the early minutes ticked by. 12 minutes in, the match remained goalless but already brimming with energy as the packed stadium roared with every duel. Gor Mahia nearly found a breakthrough in the 19th minute when Ebenezer Adu-kwaw glided into the box and squared a clever ball to Austin Odhiambo. Austin needed only to outfox the last AFC Leopards defender to finish, but a heavy first touch let him down, and the chance went begging.
The miss proved costly six minutes later. In the 25th minute, AFC Leopards struck with precision and hunger. James Kinyanjui broke loose down the left, outpaced Bryton Onyona and delivered a crisp ball to Tyson Otieno. Tyson’s low drive forced Bryne Omondi into a save, but the Gor Mahia goalkeeper could only parry it into danger. Julius Masaba reacted fastest, pouncing on the rebound to bury the opener and send the blue half of the stadium wild. AFC Leopards were ahead, and Gor Mahia suddenly had a mountain to climb.

The battle resumed after the interval with both teams pushing for dominance. Immediately after the restart, Ingwe nearly doubled their advantage when Tyson Otieno’s corner found Musa Oundo, but the defender’s header rose over the bar, much to Gor Mahia’s relief. Sensing the urgency, K’Ogalo made their first change in the 55th minute, introducing Alpha Onyango for Fidel Origa to spark the midfield.
AFC Leopards refreshed their attack moments later, bringing on Brian Wanyama and Emmanuel Lwangu for Tyson Otieno and Brian Nyongesa in the 57th minute. Injuries then forced another change in the 66th minute, with Kennedy Owino replacing the injured Kayci Odhiambo. Gor Mahia responded by withdrawing Adu-kwaw for Patrick Essombe in the 67th minute, chasing creativity in the final third.
With tension rising, Ingwe’s Boniface Munyendo found his way into the referee’s book in the 75th minute. Two minutes later, AFC Leopards executed another double switch, sending on Victor Otieno and Kelly Madada for Munyendo and Victor Omune as they tightened both their midfield and attack.
Gor Mahia’s clearest route back into the match arrived in the 80th minute. Shariff Musa broke past the AFC Leopards right-back with a burst of pace, carved his way into the box and unleashed a shot from a promising angle—only for it to crash into the side netting. It was the golden moment Gor had been waiting for, but it evaporated as quickly as it appeared.
After ninety tense minutes, AFC Leopards held firm to secure a historic 1–0 victory, sparking jubilation among their supporters. The win lifted Ingwe to sixth place on 17 points, while Gor Mahia dropped to second with 19 points, wasting the chance to reclaim top spot and suffering back-to-back league defeats. For AFC Leopards coach Fred Ambani, it was another chapter in his unbeaten run against Gor Mahia, and after the match he declared boldly, “We are going for the title.”
The victory carried deep emotional weight for the Leopards faithful. Gor Mahia had dominated this fixture for years before AFC Leopards finally broke the cycle in 2023. This latest triumph marked only their second win in many years over their fiercest rivals—sweet, long-awaited, and fully earned.
And while Ingwe celebratedNyayo National Stadium the bragging rights, Gor Mahia found consolation in the numbers off the pitch. Club treasurer Gerphas Okuku revealed on the official pages that the club collected KSh 7,011,500 in gate revenue from the derby, thanking fans for their overwhelming turnout and relentless backing.

The 98th edition of the Mashemeji Derby delivered drama, emotion and a decisive result, with AFC Leopards clawing their way to a memorable victory at Nyayo Stadium.
