Gor Mahia Shine Under the Lights as Musa Brace Inspires 4-2 Win Over Murang’a Seal

Gor Mahia began their SportPesa League title defence in emphatic fashion, overcoming Murang’a Seal 4-2 at Nyayo National Stadium on Tuesday night in a match that combined attacking brilliance, late drama and an emotional tribute to the club’s late patron, Raila Odinga.

The victory gave the reigning champions a perfect start to their quest for a record-extending 23rd league title, with Shariff Musa scoring twice, Alpha Onyango opening the scoring and Jackson Dwang producing one of the evening’s most memorable moments with a spectacular long-range strike.

Yet the contest offered more than six goals. The return of floodlights matches to the domestic league after more than a decade attracted an encouraging midweek crowd, while the occasion provided Gor Mahia supporters with an opportunity to honour their departed patron just two days before the first anniversary of his death.

The match had been eagerly anticipated following weeks of uncertainty surrounding football administration and the eventual commencement of the new league campaign over the weekend. Gor Mahia’s opening fixture was subsequently moved to Tuesday because of Nyayo National Stadium’s earlier unavailability, giving supporters their first taste of the returning evening spectacle.

K’Ogalo wasted little time making their presence felt. In the fourth minute, Musa won a free kick on the right after being fouled by Gideon Otieno. Alpha Onyango stepped up and curled an exquisite effort into the top-right corner, leaving goalkeeper Malvin Nderitu unable to prevent the champions from taking an early lead.

Murang’a Seal attempted to respond, with Majaliwa Charo creating an opportunity for Musa just past the half-hour mark. Kevin Omondi produced a sharp save, although the move was subsequently flagged for offside. The visitors continued searching for an equaliser, but Gor maintained their advantage at the break.

The champions returned from the interval with greater urgency and doubled their lead three minutes into the second half. Frank Odhiambo released an excellent pass from his own half, sending Musa through on goal. The forward outpaced Paul Ngugi before finishing confidently to make it 2-0.

Four minutes later, Dwang delivered a moment of individual brilliance. Collecting possession on the right, he spotted Nderitu out of position and unleashed a stunning effort from around the halfway line. The ball sailed into the top-left corner, leaving the Murang’a Seal goalkeeper helpless as Gor stretched their advantage to three goals.

Patrick Esombe then produced a surging run down the left before delivering a fine cross into the box. Musa met the delivery with a powerful header shortly after the hour mark, completing his brace and seemingly putting the contest beyond the visitors.

Murang’a Seal, however, refused to disappear quietly. Substitute Josphat Lopaga pulled one back in the 75th minute after receiving a well-timed pass from Elly Saenyi following a blunder by Gor Mahia Central defender Frank Odhiambo. 10 minutes later, the new signing reacted quickest after Omondi parried Michael Otieno’s powerful effort back to incoming Lopaga, completing his brace and reducing the deficit to two goals.

The late goals exposed Goalkeeping concerns for K’Ogalo, particularly after an otherwise dominant attacking display. Omondi, who was deputising for suspended goalkeeper Bryne Omondi, endured a difficult moment when an error contributed to Murang’a Seal’s second goal. Bryne had been suspended by the club following allegations of match-fixing linked to Gor Mahia’s 5-1 defeat away to Pyramids FC in the CAF Champions League. The allegations remain distinct from any established finding of wrongdoing.

Despite the late pressure, Gor held on to secure all three points. The result also extended their unbeaten run against Murang’a Seal, who remain without a victory over K’Ogalo in their SportPesa League meetings since gaining promotion to the top flight in 2023.

Beyond the action on the pitch, the evening carried considerable emotional weight for Gor Mahia supporters. At the 80th minute, fans paid tribute to Odinga, who died aged 80 last year. The timing was especially poignant, coming just two days before the first anniversary of his death.

Fireworks illuminated the night sky as supporters sang in honour of the late patron, financier and lifelong football enthusiast. Others lit candles and switched on their mobile phone torches, creating a moving display of remembrance in the stands.

The tribute reflected Odinga’s enduring association with the club and the affection many supporters continue to hold for him. His connection with Gor Mahia extended beyond patronage, with his support forming part of the club’s wider identity and history.

The return of floodlights matches also proved commercially encouraging. Gor Mahia announced gate collections of Ksh. 1,693,100 from 5,340 tickets sold, figures that underlined the potential appeal of evening league football.
